Originally from Lancashire, Allen graduated from the University of Birmingham Medical School with an Honours degree in 1973. After initial training in general surgery and ophthalmology he went to Africa with his wife Penny and spent ten years working at a small hospital in central Tanzania. On returning to the UK he combined the role of Medical Director of CBM (a large non-governmental organisation) with being Senior Lecturer at the International Centre for Eye Health, and in 2002 he was appointed Professor of International Eye Health and Director of ICEH at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Allen's research output has been prodigious, with over two hundred peer reviewed publications, a book on Community Eye Health, WHO manuals and reports, and more than 10 chapters in medical textbooks. However Allen is best known for his teaching ability and for his work in public health ophthalmology particularly chairing the expert committees on the elimination of Trachoma and also Onchocerciasis and in establishing the VISION 2020 right to sight initiative. Allen has received numerous awards from countries as diverse as Germany, India, America and Columbia and a Honorary Fellowship from our own College. In 1998 the Queen awarded him the OBE for services to Ophthalmology in the Developing World.
