Dr Flaura Winston, Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Pennsylvania (UPENN), along with a panel of experts will discuss the prevention of young driver fatalities on our roads.
Young Drivers: What you don't know could kill your child
Professor Winston, the keynote address, is an internationally recognised expert on ADHD, a practicing paediatrician at the UPENN and doctoral-trained engineer (UPenn) with a background in public health and research. Professor Winston believes that prevention is better than cure and will discuss research and practical advice on
- preventing young driver crashes;
- Attention Deficit Disorder (ADHD);
- traffic injury prevention and treatment;
- promoting appropriate use of child restraint;
- secondary prevention of traumatic stress after medical trauma.
As part of the discussion around preventing road deaths of young drivers, she will include initiatives on improving teen driving, particularly during the first six months. Additionally she will discuss the positive impacts of and initiatives to reduce drink driving across all age groups.
However, not all crashes can or will be prevented and in such cases Professor Winston will discuss how to optimize safety and present research findings that demonstrate how we can reduce the risk of injury by up to 50% with restraint use.
This meeting is part of a national initiative aimed at increasing the awareness among medical professionals and the wider public about fitness to drive and safety on our roads.
